KEYNOTE SESSION DESCRIPTIONS:

Reaching Higher: Developing Reading Strategies and Skills (K-6)

Students learn to read by reading and at the same time learn from their reading.  Students need support, guidance and instruction while developing an efficient reading process. This session will explore how to use short texts, student selected materials and textbooks while helping learners become fluent readers that understand what they read, that have strategies to infer new and important vocabulary.

Reaching Higher: Digging Deep into the Text (7-12)

Students in middle and high school still need instruction while reading sophisticated novels, informational texts and other reading materials.  Students need help in learning how to set purposes for their reading, especially informational texts assigned in class.  Then students need an array of strategies that helps them notice, note and understand important information and vocabulary. This session will focus on using short texts, textbook passages and excerpts from novels to help students develop reading and comprehension strategies.
