NMILA is the New Mexico State Council of the International Literacy Association (ILA) (formerly the International Reading Association). It was first chartered May 18, 1971. NMILA is a non-profit organization whose primary purposes are to promote effective literacy programs at all levels and to provide its members and the community with resources to increase their awareness of the current issues and practices in the field of reading. There have been as many as eight hundred (800) members in NMILA. Membership includes teachers, professional specialists, administrators, parents, university professors, university students and others committed to the advocacy of literacy and the life-long love of reading.
The New Mexico Council of the International Literacy Association is a professional organization that provides information, support and service to all with the development of literacy and the life-long love of reading.
