What is ENGLISH EXPO?
Camino Real Reading Council (CRC-NMIRA), the local Reading Council affiliate to the International Reading Association, sponsors and supports ENGLISH EXPO. This school year the 23rd competition will be held on February 25, 2012 at La Cueva High School.
ENGLISH EXPO is an academic competition in all areas of English. There are now 24 contests in writing, skills, speaking and production expression. The newest Speaking Event is Shakespearean Monologue.
Generally, over 500 students from about 30+ middle and high schools from around the state are involved with the contest. At least one teacher sponsor and enough adults for every five students prepare and bring their students to the competition. All attending adults are expected to help as contest monitors and judges. Non-competing children and non-sponsoring adult chaperones are not allowed at the event. In other words, EVERYONE ON THE SCHOOL PREMISES MUST BE INVOLVED WITH THE EVENT.
Please discourage parent and family audience attendance. Lunch is provided for the adults, but we are no longer able to provide their breakfasts. The school site provides lunch concessions for the students to purchase their lunches. Unless students bring their lunch, food should not purchased and brought on to campus during the event.
Beautiful bronze medals are awarded in each contest for the top five winners in both middle and high school categories. Teachers and adult sponsors are the monitors and judges. A Guide Book with contest rubrics is available for purchase and copying at the school. Midday activities include two School Challenges (Spelling Bee and Poetry Slam) where a school team can compete to win $50 for their school or club, attending/competing in the Speaking Finals, attending a group activity in the gym (guest speaker, movie, etc.).
Students pay a registration fee to participate. There is no fee for adults, but one sponsoring teacher from each school must be a member of Camino Real Reading Council (CRC-NMIRA). Membership in this local council provides membership in the State Council, too.
Camino Real Council offers a Bring-a-Book Exchange during the event. Students are invited to bring gently-used books to exchange at the CRC table. The Council holds a raffle to support Community Service Projects (Palomas Primary School and the Title 1 Homeless Project).
A sales table usually offers Expo t-shirts, pencils, NMIRA pens, pads, and pins for purchase. Exhibits by publishers and other teacher/parent interests may be available at the event.
